What is the difference between a Class A and Class B CDL?
A Class A CDL allows you to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the towed vehicle is heavier than 10,000 pounds (e.g., tractor-trailers). A Class B CDL is for single vehicles that aren’t hitched to a large trailer, such as delivery trucks, school buses, or dump trucks.
How long does it take to get a CDL Class A license?
On average, most full-time programs take 3 to 7 weeks to complete. This includes classroom instruction to pass the written permit exams and hands-on “behind-the-wheel” training to master maneuvers and road driving.
What are the ELDT requirements?
As of February 2022, the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) rule requires all new applicants to complete a standardized training curriculum from a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR). You cannot take your final Skills Test until this training is electronically recorded in the federal system.
Can I get a CDL if I only know how to drive an automatic?
Yes, you can. However, if you take your CDL Skills Test in a truck equipped with an automatic transmission, a “Restriction E” will be placed on your license. This means you will be legally prohibited from operating commercial vehicles with a manual transmission. To remove this restriction, you must retake the road test in a manual truck.
What is the DOT Medical Exam, and why do I need it?
The Department of Transportation (DOT) physical is a health check conducted by a certified medical examiner. It ensures that a driver is physically fit to operate a heavy vehicle safely. The exam covers vision, hearing, blood pressure, and a review of medical history. You must carry a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (Fed Med card) to keep your CDL active.
