ATA Leadership Search Begins After Chris Spear's Immediate Departure

The American Trucking Associations has begun searching for a new president and CEO after Chris Spear departed the organization effective August 21. FreightWaves reported that ATA Chairman Greg Hodgen informed members that Spear's tenure had concluded and later issued a statement saying Spear had notified the executive committee that he was leaving immediately. No reason for the departure was announced.

Spear had led ATA since 2016 and was beginning a contract extension scheduled to run through 2029. During his tenure, the federation strengthened its Washington advocacy and pursued policies involving infrastructure investment, truck parking, lawsuit reform, driver qualification, technology and environmental regulation. Hodgen said a search is underway for the next president and CEO, but ATA did not provide a selection timeline or name an interim leader in the report.

The change matters because ATA represents motor carriers, state trucking associations and industry suppliers in major federal policy debates. A new chief executive can influence advocacy priorities, communication strategy and the association's approach to regulators and Congress. Hodgen told members that ATA's policy and technical teams remain in place and that its advocacy agenda will continue during the transition.

For drivers, schools and fleets, the leadership announcement does not change any CDL, ELDT, hours-of-service or equipment rule. Regulatory obligations change only through official agency actions, legislation, court orders or state licensing decisions. Carriers should continue monitoring FMCSA, DOT and state notices rather than treating an association personnel change as new policy. The immediate question for the industry is continuity: whether ATA maintains its existing agenda while the board evaluates candidates, and how the next leader balances safety, workforce, technology and operating-cost pressures across a diverse membership.
