A clean driving routine begins while the truck is parked. Searching for a charging cable, adjusting directions, or reaching for a fallen object divides attention at exactly the wrong time. Preparing the cab reduces small interruptions that can become serious driving errors.
Put essentials within a safe routine
Secure loose items, adjust the seat and mirrors, and set the controls you will need. Place documents and belongings where they cannot interfere with pedals or controls. A dropped object should stay where it is until you can stop safely and retrieve it.
Prepare the route and communication plan
Review directions and navigation settings before departure. Let the appropriate contact know that nonurgent messages will be answered when parked. An incoming message does not create an obligation to read or answer while driving. Follow applicable rules and employer policies for device use.
Recognize mental distractions too
An argument, time pressure, or worry about a missed turn can narrow attention. If you need to solve a problem, find a safe location to stop. Keep training conversations relevant to the drive and tell the instructor when an explanation is competing with your ability to handle traffic.
Put it into practice
Make a personal departure checklist of five cab tasks. Use it before three supervised drives and revise anything that still causes you to reach or search while moving.
