Alaska-issued commercial drivers have a temporary exception to the nationwide shift toward electronic medical-certification records. Commercial Carrier Journal reported October 8 that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration granted a one-year provisional exemption allowing Alaska CDL and commercial learner's permit holders, along with their employers, to keep using a paper medical examiner's certificate as proof of qualification for up to 60 days after it is issued.
The exemption takes effect October 12, 2026, and expires October 12, 2027. FMCSA's official notice says Alaska is now the only state that has not implemented the Medical Examiner's Certification Integration rule, commonly called NRII. That system sends examination results electronically from the National Registry to state driver-licensing agencies. The Alaska relief does not change any physical-qualification standard or extend an expired medical certificate.
The distinction matters outside Alaska. As of October 12, drivers licensed in every other state and the District of Columbia, and their employers, may no longer rely on a paper certificate as proof of medical certification for any period. A driver who works in Alaska but holds a CDL issued elsewhere is not covered merely because the trip begins or ends in the state.
Alaska drivers should carry a legible, current paper certificate during the 60-day window and confirm that their employer's qualification file matches the certificate. Carriers should verify the issuing state on each driver's CDL, track the examination date and avoid treating the exemption as a general grace period. Drivers elsewhere should check their state motor-vehicle record after an exam and quickly resolve missing electronic data with the medical examiner and licensing agency. The exemption prevents a records-transition gap; it does not relax the duty to remain medically qualified.
