ArcBest August LTL Tonnage Rises 9% on Heavier Shipments

ArcBest's asset-based operation, which includes ABF Freight, reported a 9% year-over-year increase in August tonnage as heavier industrial freight outweighed fewer shipments. FreightWaves reported September 9 that revenue per day also increased 9%, accelerating from July's 7.7% gain. The update offers a timely view of less-than-truckload demand in a market with limited public operating data.

Daily shipments declined 4% from August 2025, but average weight per shipment rose 14%. Revenue per shipment increased 14%, helped by heavier loads and higher fuel surcharges. Yield was unchanged when fuel was included and declined by a low-single-digit percentage excluding fuel. On a two-year stacked basis, tonnage improved 11.4%, the strongest reading of the current cycle for the company.

Management also raised the third-quarter adjusted operating-income outlook for ArcBest's asset-light unit, including truck brokerage, to $10 million-$12 million from $6 million-$8 million. August daily revenue in that segment increased 26% year over year while shipments were flat, with productivity and pricing discipline contributing alongside fuel. The company maintained its asset-based margin guidance.

The mix matters for terminals and drivers. Fewer, heavier shipments can support tonnage and margins while changing dock labor, trailer utilization and pickup-and-delivery patterns. Carriers should watch weight, density, handling requirements and stop counts instead of reading the tonnage headline as a broad surge in shipment volume. Shippers may see firm pricing where industrial freight and constrained truckload capacity put pressure on alternatives. Drivers and dock teams should expect safe loading, securement and weight distribution to remain central as heavier freight moves through the network. One carrier's results are not the entire LTL market, but they strengthen the signal that industrial activity is supporting freight demand.
