The American Transportation Research Institute has opened two surveys to measure how truck driver health affects fleet costs, productivity and safety. TheTrucker.com reported October 15 that one questionnaire is for professional drivers and the other is for motor carriers. Both remain open through November 13, and ATRI says responses will be kept confidential and reported only in aggregate.
The anonymous driver survey asks for basic health information, including the duration of the driver's medical certificate, along with questions about maintaining wellness on the road. The carrier questionnaire seeks fleet-level averages for medical-card duration, insurance costs and operating performance indicators. Carriers are also asked to share the driver survey so the research includes experience from behind the wheel as well as company records.
ATRI plans to examine relationships among driver health, health-care spending, workers' compensation, productivity, turnover and medical qualification. The study could help quantify costs that are often discussed separately, but a survey is not a medical examination and participation does not change federal qualification requirements. Results will also reflect the people and fleets that choose to respond, so the eventual findings should be read with the published methodology in mind.
Drivers who participate should use the official survey and avoid sending personal medical details through unverified messages. Fleets can contribute useful aggregate information without pressuring employees to disclose individual diagnoses. Meanwhile, carriers can review practical wellness supports such as predictable scheduling, access to healthier food, opportunities for safe activity and reminders before medical certification deadlines. CDL programs should prepare students for the lifestyle demands of the job and explain that protecting long-term health supports both employability and safe decision-making.
