August Manufacturing PMI at 54.6 Signals Continued Freight Demand

U.S. manufacturing expanded for an eighth consecutive month in August, giving truckload and less-than-truckload carriers another positive freight-demand signal. FreightWaves reported September 1 that the Institute for Supply Management's Manufacturing PMI registered 54.6, down one point from July but still above the 50 level that indicates expansion.

New orders also expanded for an eighth month, posting a 53.7 reading even after falling three points from July. Production remained stronger at 58.3, while the backlog index stayed in growth territory at 51.8. Manufacturing employment held above 50 for a second month after turning positive in July for the first time in 33 months. Those readings suggest industrial freight demand remains active, though momentum cooled from the prior month.

The operating picture is not uniformly easy. Supplier deliveries slowed for a ninth straight month, transportation capacity remained tight and the raw-material prices index held at 71.1. Survey sentiment was more cautious than the headline PMI: 42% of comments were positive and 58% negative, with pricing volatility a leading concern. FreightWaves noted that industrial activity typically generates roughly two-thirds of public LTL carrier revenue, making the manufacturing report especially relevant to that sector.

Carriers should treat the PMI as a national directional indicator rather than a guarantee of volume on every lane. Sales teams can compare customer orders, tender lead times and plant schedules with regional capacity before adding equipment. Drivers may see stronger activity around factory, warehouse and supplier networks, but appointment discipline and communication remain important when delivery times lengthen. The September data releases on tonnage and employment will help show whether August's expansion converts into sustained fall freight.
