Brake Safety Week 2026 Targets Drums, Rotors and Out-of-Service Defects

Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Brake Safety Week is underway across the United States, Canada and Mexico through August 29. CDLLife's May 19 coverage of the earlier unannounced Brake Safety Day previewed the 2026 emphasis, while CVSA confirmed on August 23 that the weeklong inspection and enforcement initiative had begun. Inspectors are concentrating on commercial-vehicle brake systems, with extra attention on drums and rotors.

Certified inspectors may identify missing, loose, contaminated or cracked parts, damaged spring-brake housings, air leaks, worn linings and other conditions that affect braking performance. Vehicles with brake-related out-of-service violations, or another qualifying critical defect, can be removed from service until repairs are completed. The campaign does not create a new CDL endorsement or replace ordinary roadside-inspection standards; it concentrates enforcement resources on existing safety requirements.

The spring Brake Safety Day results show why preparation matters. CDLLife reported 4,021 inspections across 47 jurisdictions, with 574 vehicles placed out of service for critical brake violations. In the United States, the brake out-of-service rate was 13.9%. Inspectors also recorded 43 drum-and-rotor violations, including 21 serious enough to trigger an out-of-service determination.

Drivers should complete careful pre-trip and post-trip inspections, listen for air leaks, monitor warning devices and report pulling, vibration, unusual heat or changes in stopping response. They should not crawl beneath an unsupported vehicle or attempt repairs outside their training. Carriers and maintenance teams should verify adjustment, lining condition, hoses, chambers, drums, rotors and repair documentation before dispatch. A clean inspection begins with defects being reported early and corrected by qualified personnel, not with cosmetic preparation at the last minute.
