Continental has introduced two Generation 5 regional-haul truck tires designed for fleets that operate through frequent starts, stops and changing road conditions. Heavy Duty Trucking reported October 2 that the Conti HSR 5 EP steer tire and Conti HDR 5 EP drive tire are scheduled to become available during October, with additional sizes planned throughout 2027.
The HSR 5 EP uses a five-rib tread pattern and an optimized footprint intended to promote even wear. Continental estimates that it can deliver 22% more mileage than the previous steer tire while maintaining rolling-resistance performance aimed at fuel efficiency. The HDR 5 EP uses an open-shoulder design for traction, plus features intended to resist trapped stones, cuts and chips. The manufacturer estimates a 19% gain in removal mileage compared with its predecessor. Removal mileage is the distance traveled before a tire is taken out of service.
Both products are also designed around casing durability, which matters when a fleet plans to retread rather than discard a casing after the original tread wears out. Better casing protection can support more predictable tire costs, but the published mileage improvements are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed results. Loads, alignment, inflation, road surface, speed, climate and maintenance practices can all change actual performance.
Regional fleets considering the tires should establish a controlled trial before changing specifications across the operation. Record starting tread depth, axle position, miles, air-pressure history, rotations, irregular wear and removal reason. Compare cost per mile against the current tire on similar routes and equipment, and inspect casings for retread eligibility. Drivers can support the evaluation with daily inflation and damage checks. A longer-wearing tire creates value only when it also delivers dependable traction, fuel performance and usable casing life in the fleet's real duty cycle.
