Daimler Headlight Recall Expands to 3,000 Aftermarket Assemblies

Daimler Truck North America is recalling more than 3,000 aftermarket Grote headlight assemblies used as direct replacements on Freightliner M2 106 and M2 112 medium-duty trucks. Land Line Media reported the equipment recall August 11 using National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents. The affected low beams can remain too dim for several minutes after a driver switches from high beams in higher ambient temperatures.

Federal recall documents attribute the defect to software in the headlights’ thermal-protection logic. Four part numbers are involved: A66-41940-000, -001, -002 and -003. Reduced illumination can limit a driver’s view of the roadway and increase crash risk, particularly during nighttime transitions. Daimler reported no related warranty claims, crashes or injuries as of August 6, but drivers may receive no warning beyond the dimmer beam itself.

NHTSA identifies the equipment campaign as 26E052, while Daimler uses recall number F1036. The manufacturer had not established a remedy as of the report date. This campaign is separate from, but related to, a July vehicle recall covering the same problem in more than 23,000 factory-installed headlights. Owners should not assume that completion of one campaign automatically resolves the other.

Fleet managers should check parts invoices and maintenance records rather than relying only on a truck’s model year. Drivers who notice weak low beams after using high beams should report the condition promptly, avoid outrunning available visibility and confirm that both lamps operate during the pre-trip inspection. Owners can contact Daimler customer service with the recall number and monitor NHTSA’s recall record for remedy instructions. The notice is a safety action, not a reason for an untrained person to alter headlight software or wiring.
