DOT’s 2026 Roadway Safety Strategy Targets High-Risk Carriers and Truck Parking

The U.S. Department of Transportation has released its 2026 National Roadway Safety Strategy, placing commercial-vehicle enforcement, qualified CDL issuance and truck parking among its central trucking priorities. Land Line Media reported the strategy on August 7. The official DOT document estimates that 36,640 people died in motor-vehicle crashes during 2025 and notes that more than 5,300 people died in large-truck crashes during 2024.

For trucking, the plan calls for stronger compliance standards and expanded investigations aimed at high-risk motor carriers and deceptive business networks. It also directs greater oversight toward programs responsible for licensing safe, qualified commercial drivers. Roadside inspection efforts, high-crash corridors and coordination with law enforcement are identified as areas where federal agencies intend to increase their impact.

The strategy separately recognizes the safety consequences of inadequate truck parking. DOT says drivers can face a choice between stopping early or risking fatigue and hours-of-service problems while searching for a legal space. Its stated response is to elevate parking projects through federal funding programs. The roadmap also supports congestion relief, better incident management and technology that may prevent secondary crashes.

This is a multiyear policy strategy, not a new regulation that instantly changes a driver’s daily requirements. DOT says the listed activities are intended to advance through December 2028, and individual grants, rules or enforcement initiatives will require their own implementation steps. Carriers should continue following current FMCSA rules while monitoring formal notices. The practical preparation remains straightforward: keep driver qualification and vehicle records accurate, correct inspection defects promptly, plan legal parking before available hours become tight and document safety procedures consistently.
