Estes Invests $56 Million in Cross-Border and Offshore LTL Capacity

Estes Express Lines is investing nearly $56 million in terminals, equipment and capacity for freight moving between the continental United States, Canada, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. FreightWaves reported the expansion September 17. The privately held less-than-truckload carrier says it is taking a long-term view of trade and freight demand, using current real-estate and equipment opportunities to prepare its network for future growth.

A larger Laredo, Texas, facility will roughly double the carrier's primary Mexico gateway from about 40 dock doors to 85 or 86. Estes is also developing routes through Otay Mesa, California, and El Paso-Juarez to reduce mileage and improve network efficiency. In the north, a relocated 171-door Buffalo terminal quadrupled the previous location's capacity, while Detroit expanded to 139 doors and Fargo, North Dakota, nearly doubled.

The company currently operates 13,857 doors across roughly 300 locations and expects to pass 14,000 by the end of October if construction stays on schedule. Future capital spending is expected to include more ocean containers and heated trailers for next-day Canadian service. Estes reports growing Canada tonnage and an average shipment weight increase of roughly 5% to 6%, even as customers remain cautious about tariffs and trade policy.

For drivers and small carriers, the expansion highlights where freight networks are adding physical capacity: border gateways, regional terminals and offshore consolidation points. More doors can improve flow, but service still depends on customs documentation, appointments, equipment availability and reliable handoffs. Carriers serving these lanes should track changes in routing and tender patterns instead of assuming every market will grow equally.
