Federal Indictment Alleges $105.9 Million Semi-Truck Investment Fraud Scheme

Federal prosecutors have charged the owner of a semi-truck investment business in an alleged $105.9 million fraud scheme. FreightWaves reported the case September 27. The Justice Department says a federal grand jury indicted Kristopher Lunsford, 46, of Henderson, Nevada, on six counts of wire fraud and two counts of money laundering. The allegations concern investor funds collected between December 2023 and May 2025.

According to the indictment, participants paid roughly $25,000 to $40,000 per vehicle and were promised weekly returns of about $1,000 to $1,250. Prosecutors allege that investor money was not used as represented to buy and operate trucks, and that later payments depended substantially on money from newer participants. The government is seeking forfeiture of $105,940,214.93.

An indictment is an accusation, not a conviction. Lunsford is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court, and the filed charges do not establish that every truck-investment arrangement is unlawful. Still, the case highlights the need to verify both the equipment and the operating business before committing money to a passive trucking venture.

Prospective investors should independently confirm vehicle identification numbers, titles, liens, insurance, carrier authority and actual revenue records. Bank statements and settlement documents should match the trucks and customers described in the offering. Promoters should explain who controls dispatch, maintenance, taxes and resale, and investors should be able to inspect underlying contracts. Guaranteed-looking weekly returns, pressure to reinvest and limited access to equipment or financial records are reasons to pause and obtain legal and accounting review.
