Fleet AI Tools Expand Driver Coaching, Dispatch and Live Data Access

Three fleet-technology updates show how trucking companies are connecting artificial intelligence with dispatch, safety coaching and live operating data. FleetOwner reported September 23 that PCS Software, Samsara and Smith System have expanded tools intended to help carriers plan freight, analyze current conditions and turn driver-behavior alerts into targeted training rather than another disconnected dashboard.

PCS Software expanded its Cortex platform to optimize dispatch across truckload and less-than-truckload fleets in real time, with planning windows extending as far as 30 days. The system evaluates chains of loads, driver assignments, routes and backhaul opportunities across the fleet. Dispatchers remain responsible for decisions, but the broader view may help identify profitable combinations that are difficult to compare manually under time pressure.

Samsara introduced a connection that lets authorized AI assistants retrieve live fleet information while preserving existing permissions. More than 40 read-only tools can surface vehicle, driver, safety-event and hours-of-service data. Smith System, meanwhile, launched a managed driver-risk program that combines telematics signals, monitoring, training and coaching around its established safety methodology. FleetOwner cited one deployment of more than 2,000 drivers that reported a 38% reduction in preventable accidents over two years.

Carriers should evaluate these systems as decision-support tools, not replacements for professional judgment. Start with a defined use case, restrict access to necessary data and test whether recommendations respect hours-of-service limits, customer requirements and driver qualifications. Drivers need to know which events are reviewed, how coaching decisions are made and how to challenge inaccurate records. The strongest implementation connects technology with transparent policy, human review and measurable safety or operating outcomes.
