FMCSA Registry Shows 9,970 CDL Training Locations Closed

Federal oversight is rapidly reshaping the list of schools authorized to provide entry-level driver training. Transport Topics reported October 8 that Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration data showed 9,970 training-provider locations in closed status as of October 5, leaving just over 31,000 active locations in the federal Training Provider Registry. The figures describe registry locations, not necessarily 9,970 distinct companies or sudden enforcement shutdowns.

The registry is central to the Entry-Level Driver Training rule. Before a first-time Class A or Class B applicant, or a driver seeking certain endorsements, can take the applicable state skills or knowledge test, the required theory and behind-the-wheel training must be completed through a listed provider. Schools must certify that their programs meet federal curriculum and instructor standards and must transmit completion records to the registry.

A closed listing can reflect several circumstances, including a provider leaving the market, losing eligibility or being removed during agency review. That distinction matters for students comparing programs. A polished website or local advertisement does not establish current federal eligibility, and a location operating under a familiar school name may have a different status from another branch.

Prospective students should search the official Training Provider Registry for the exact training location before paying tuition or signing financing documents. Confirm that the provider offers the needed license class or endorsement, ask when completion records are transmitted and retain enrollment agreements and receipts. Current students who see a status change should contact the provider and their state licensing agency before changing schools. FMCSA's registry count is an important compliance signal, but students should verify their own location and training record rather than assuming every closed entry creates the same consequence.
