FMCSA Revoked ELD Deadline Triggers Out-of-Service Risk September 8

A federal replacement deadline has arrived for motor carriers using 10 electronic logging devices that FMCSA removed from its registered list on July 9. FreightWaves reported the revocations and the compliance timeline, while FMCSA's ELD News and Events page confirms that September 8 is the final replacement date for the affected devices.

The group includes Ontime Logs iosix, LAST MINUTE ELD, Porter ELD, Zee HOS Compliance, EV ELD IOSIX, Light and Travel ELD, PREMIERRIDE LOGS, 2BRO ELD, 305 ELD and TT ELD 40. FMCSA said the devices failed minimum technical requirements in Appendix A to Subpart B of 49 CFR Part 395. The agency instructed carriers to discontinue using them, record required hours-of-service data on paper logs or compliant logging software and install a registered replacement.

Beginning September 8, a driver who continues using one of the devices while it remains revoked can be cited under 49 CFR 395.8(a)(1) for having no record of duty status and placed out of service under Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance criteria. A provider may regain registration after correcting deficiencies, so fleets should check FMCSA's live registered and revoked ELD lists rather than relying on an old vendor message.

Carriers should document the replacement, confirm that driver profiles and vehicle assignments transferred correctly, and train drivers on logins, annotations, malfunctions and roadside data transfers. Drivers should inspect recent records before dispatch and keep required supporting documents available. Purchasing teams can also review a provider's registration history, customer support and update practices before choosing a new device. The deadline is operational now; a promised fix does not substitute for a currently compliant ELD.
