Hazmat Blitz Places 683 Commercial Vehicles Out of Service

A five-day hazardous-materials inspection initiative placed 683 commercial vehicles out of service across the United States and Canada. Commercial Carrier Journal reported the results September 16, and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance published the official figures September 10. Inspectors conducted 5,046 inspections during the unannounced June 8–12 HM/DG Road Blitz, focusing on the safe transportation of hazardous materials and dangerous goods.

In the United States, inspectors completed 4,122 inspections and placed 500 vehicles out of service, a 12.1% rate. Canadian inspectors completed 924 inspections and placed 183 vehicles out of service, a 19.8% rate. The combined out-of-service rate was 13.5%. Inspectors also issued 1,187 CVSA decals to 794 power units and 393 trailers that passed qualifying inspections without critical violations.

The findings show why paperwork and packaging deserve the same attention as brakes and tires. Inspectors recorded 265 shipping-paper violations, including 57 that triggered out-of-service conditions. They found 197 placarding violations, 55 of them out of service, plus 29 out-of-service leaks and 128 out-of-service cargo-securement violations. The initiative also identified missing hazardous-materials endorsements, registrations, safety permits and emergency-response information.

Before a hazardous-materials load moves, carriers should verify the shipping description, emergency information, markings, labels and placards against the actual commodity and quantity. Drivers need the correct endorsement and accessible documents, while loaders should inspect packages for damage, leakage and securement. A checklist cannot replace required training, but it can catch mismatches before a roadside inspection. The results are not a new regulation or a future inspection schedule; they are a practical warning that small documentation and handling errors can stop a load until the condition is corrected.
