I-95 Horse Trailer Rescue Highlights Tire and Specialized-Cargo Safety

A coordinated rescue on Interstate 95 in South Carolina freed an injured racehorse from an overturned commercial trailer after a weekend crash. TheTrucker.com reported September 6 that the incident occurred near mile marker 55 in Colleton County and blocked both southbound lanes while emergency crews worked at the scene.

According to Colleton County Fire Rescue, the northbound truck had a suspected right-front tire blowout before crossing the median, damaging approximately 100 feet of guardrail and overturning into the southbound lanes. The trailer then struck the cab of another truck. Investigators had not issued a final cause, so the reported tire failure remains preliminary. Neither driver required ambulance transport.

The horse suffered non-life-threatening injuries and became trapped with one leg in a trailer window. Responders used ventilation fans and water because temperatures exceeded 95 degrees. Veterinarians sedated the animal, allowing crews to remove a window guard and part of the trailer wall. The horse exited on its own and was transported for treatment. I-95 reopened about three and a half hours later.

Specialized livestock hauling requires planning beyond an ordinary freight move. Drivers and carriers should inspect tire condition and pressure, confirm trailer ventilation, secure interior dividers and carry current emergency contacts for owners, veterinarians and responders. Route plans should account for heat, traffic and safe stopping locations. After any crash, drivers should protect the scene, report hazards accurately and avoid actions that could further frighten or injure an animal. The rescue demonstrates why equipment readiness and a practiced emergency plan matter when living cargo is aboard.
