Immersion-Cooled Truck Battery Test Targets Heat and Durability

Shell and FAW Trucks are testing an immersion-cooled battery pack in the Starship 3.0 Hybrid concept truck, a technology intended to manage heat during demanding charging and driving conditions. FreightWaves reported the project September 11 ahead of the truck's planned display at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, Germany, beginning September 14.

Unlike conventional cooling plates that draw heat from selected surfaces, the design surrounds battery cells with an electrically insulating fluid. That direct contact is intended to transfer heat more evenly during sustained high-power charging and discharging. Shell said initial validation showed as much as a 98% improvement in maximum gradability, a 0.8% gain in vehicle energy efficiency and potential battery-life improvement of up to 32%.

Those figures are manufacturer-reported results from specified test conditions, not promises for production fleets. Shell said the testing was verified by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center, with final performance data expected after validation is complete. FAW is evaluating whether the technology could support future hybrid trucks, but the Starship system remains a concept-stage demonstration rather than an available commercial specification.

For fleets, better thermal control could eventually support battery durability, charging performance and uptime in heavy-duty hybrid applications. The operating case will still depend on added weight, fluid service requirements, leak protection, repair procedures, cost and performance across weather and duty cycles. Technicians would need clear training for safe diagnosis and maintenance. Carriers should watch the results without building replacement plans around early claims. A successful test can identify a promising engineering path; only production validation and real-world service will show whether the benefits hold across trucking operations.
