Los Angeles-Long Beach Rail Container Dwell Rises to 6.75 Days

Rail-bound containers spent longer at the Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex in August while local truck pickups remained comparatively fluid. FreightWaves reported September 16 that average rail dwell increased to 6.75 days from 6.34 days in July. Average dwell for containers leaving by truck improved slightly to 2.95 days from 3.03 days.

The two ports handled 1,875,899 twenty-foot equivalent units during the month, a near-record total. Holding truck dwell below three days suggests drayage gates and nearby delivery networks absorbed that volume without a material slowdown. The rail figure tells a different story: inland containers waited nearly a week on average before departure, adding pressure for cargo destined beyond Southern California.

For trucking companies, the split can affect appointments, chassis turns and customer expectations. A container that clears the marine terminal quickly may still face an inland delay when its next leg depends on rail. Drayage carriers should confirm whether a box is truck-delivered, transloaded or moving intact by train, because each path creates different timing, storage and equipment risks. Dispatchers should also monitor terminal availability rather than treating a portwide average as a promise for every load.

Shippers can reduce surprises by sharing routing instructions early, tracking last-free-day deadlines and building contingency time into inland schedules. Carriers should document wait time, check chassis and appointment availability before dispatch and communicate any rail-related handoff delays. The August data is not evidence that truck gates are congested; it shows that strong cargo volume is testing the intermodal connection beyond the terminal. Reliable fall freight planning will depend on both efficient drayage and faster rail evacuation.
