Manufacturing PMI Hits 55.5 as LTL Demand Outlook Improves

U.S. manufacturing expanded for a 10th consecutive month in October, giving less-than-truckload carriers another positive demand signal. FreightWaves reported November 2 that the Institute for Supply Management's Manufacturing PMI reached 55.5, one point above September and analyst expectations. Readings above 50 indicate expansion, but the index does not translate directly into the same volume increase for every carrier or region.

Several underlying measures strengthened. New orders also registered 55.5, while production climbed 2.3 points to 59, its highest level in five years. Employment remained in expansion territory at 52.4. Customers' inventories stayed at a low 41.6, a condition often associated with future replenishment. Backlogs eased to 54.6, and the supplier-deliveries index rose to 59.1, signaling longer lead times and continuing supply-chain constraints.

Cost pressure remains the counterweight. The prices index was 75.2 despite declining 2.7 points from September. Survey comments frequently cited pricing volatility, longer lead times, tariffs and geopolitical disruption. FreightWaves noted that ISM manufacturing data often leads changes in LTL shipments by roughly three months, so the October result may influence early-2027 planning rather than produce an immediate nationwide load surge.

Carriers can use the report as one input alongside actual tenders, shipment counts, weight per shipment and lane-level revenue. Shippers should review inventory plans and secure dependable capacity where production orders are rising, while avoiding commitments based on a single monthly index. Drivers and job seekers can view the data as evidence of improving industrial activity, not a guarantee of uniform hiring or mileage. The practical signal is cautious optimism: demand indicators are improving, but high input costs and uneven customer sentiment can still limit freight growth.
