Mexico Heavy-Truck Exports Jump 66.7% as U.S. Trade Stakes Rise

Mexico's heavy-duty vehicle industry delivered a sharp July rebound, with exports rising 66.7% from a year earlier to 13,117 trucks and buses. FreightWaves reported August 16 that manufacturers produced 14,675 heavy vehicles during the month, up 51.8%, while wholesale sales increased 19.1% to 2,590 units. The figures come from data released by Mexico's INEGI statistics agency and industry association ANPACT.

The monthly surge does not erase a softer first half. Through July, production and exports were each 6.1% below 2025 levels. Retail sales fell 20.1% to 19,115 units, while wholesale sales were the only year-to-date growth category, rising 5.1% to 17,566. July retail volume also declined 9.9% year over year, showing that factory momentum and domestic buying are moving at different speeds.

The United States remains the decisive destination. Of 71,377 heavy vehicles Mexico exported during the first seven months, 65,983 units, or 92.4%, went to the U.S. ANPACT urged policymakers to preserve certainty under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement and raised concerns about Section 232 tariffs. For U.S. fleets, the data matters because cross-border manufacturing conditions can influence tractor availability, component flow, pricing and delivery schedules. Buyers should confirm a vehicle's assembly location, model year, production allocation and any contract language that assigns future tariff or customs costs. Cross-border carriers should continue following existing documentation, cabotage, insurance and driver-qualification rules rather than acting on policy headlines. July points to renewed production strength, but the year-to-date totals show why equipment planning should rely on firm build dates and total landed cost instead of one month's growth rate.
