Michigan Suspends CDL Training Program Over CLP and Recordkeeping Violations

Michigan has summarily suspended Northern Michigan University’s truck-driving program after investigators identified multiple alleged compliance failures. Land Line Media reported the action August 13. The Michigan Department of State’s official August 7 notice says the school provided behind-the-wheel instruction without first verifying that each student held a valid commercial learner’s permit.

The initial investigation also found failures involving legally required records, student financial documentation and written agreements completed before instruction. State officials said records were kept outside the school’s established office and that students were allowed to sign blank instructional documents that were completed later. These findings concern state provider requirements and do not establish that every student’s CDL or ELDT record is automatically invalid.

The suspension remains in place while the investigation continues. No classroom, range or other instruction may be held during that period. Michigan directs affected students and families to the Driver Education Unit at DriverEd@Michigan.gov or 517-241-6850. The state also accepts complaints concerning certified driver-education providers through its official complaint process.

CDL students anywhere should protect themselves by confirming that a school is authorized, receiving a signed enrollment agreement before training begins and keeping copies of attendance, payment and completion records. Before behind-the-wheel instruction, verify that the learner’s permit is current and matches the intended vehicle class. Students should never sign blank attendance sheets, contracts or skill records. A provider’s state approval and its FMCSA Training Provider Registry status serve different purposes, so applicants should check both when ELDT applies. The Michigan case reinforces a basic rule: documented, properly sequenced training protects students, schools and the integrity of the licensing process.
