Missouri I-70 Project Adds 255 Truck Parking Spaces

Missouri is moving ahead with a $33 million Interstate 70 truck-parking project designed to add 255 spaces at public rest areas. Land Line Media reported the expansion September 1, highlighting a corridor where more than 10,000 trucks travel daily and legal parking routinely fills during peak periods.

The Missouri Department of Transportation's official project materials confirm improvements at Concordia, Boonville, Mineola and Wright City. When complete, those locations are expected to offer 506 public truck-parking stalls in total. The selected design-build plan also includes pavement work, lighting upgrades at every site, restroom remodeling at Concordia and Wright City, 195 car spaces and five RV spaces. Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2026, with completion targeted for late 2028.

MoDOT says all public truck-parking areas along I-70 are over capacity during peak hours, while 75% of private truck stops also exceed capacity. Expanding off-highway parking can reduce trucks stopped on ramp shoulders, lower roadside conflict and limit damage to shoulders and guardrails. Still, the announced spaces will arrive in phases; drivers should not plan trips as if the added capacity is already open.

CDL drivers using the corridor should continue identifying primary and backup parking before their available hours become tight. Dispatchers can support that plan by accounting for shipper delays, weather, construction and the distance between legal stopping points. During construction, fleets should monitor MoDOT updates for temporary access changes at affected rest areas. The project addresses a major safety and quality-of-life need, but it does not change hours-of-service limits or permit parking on ramps while new stalls are being built.
