Motive Raises $1.3 Billion to Expand AI Fleet Technology

Motive has secured more than $1.3 billion in growth financing from General Catalyst, adding fresh capital for artificial intelligence, fleet products and customer support. FreightWaves reported September 10 that the San Francisco-based technology company withdrew its previously filed S-1 after the financing, leaving a public listing as a possible later step while it continues operating privately.

The company said annual recurring revenue exceeded $600 million after growing 30% year over year. Revenue from customers spending more than $100,000 annually increased nearly 60%, while net revenue retention for those large accounts topped 120%. Motive says it serves nearly 100,000 customers across trucking, construction, energy, field service, manufacturing and agriculture, with more than 1 million commercial vehicles on its platform.

The investment is expected to support AI development along with sales, service and field teams. Motive's existing tools include camera-based detection for phone use, fatigue and following distance. Newer maintenance and operations products are designed to move beyond alerts by creating follow-up actions, such as scheduling repairs, flagging possible fuel-card fraud or escalating repeated high-risk behavior.

For carriers, the financing signals continued competition among connected-fleet platforms, but a larger investment round does not guarantee a return for every customer. Buyers should test data accuracy, driver workflows, integration costs, privacy controls and support response before scaling a system. Safety teams should define who reviews alerts and how drivers can add context. Maintenance leaders should confirm that detected faults flow into existing work-order processes. AI can reduce manual work when the operating response is clear; without ownership and training, it can become another stream of notifications competing for attention.
