National Diesel Average Hits Record $5.85 as Fleet Costs Climb

The national average retail price for diesel reached a record $5.85 per gallon on September 4, according to AAA data reported by Land Line Media. The reading moved above AAA's previous record of $5.816 from June 19, 2022, adding new pressure to owner-operators and fleets already managing tight freight margins.

Land Line reported that the average stood at $5.61 one week earlier, $5.37 one month earlier and $3.71 a year earlier. Those comparisons come from AAA's daily retail-price series and should not be confused with the U.S. Energy Information Administration's separate weekly diesel survey. Both are useful indicators, but their timing and collection methods differ.

Fuel markets remain volatile. The EIA's August outlook described constrained petroleum flows and declining inventories, while projecting lower prices later in the year. Forecasts can change with crude-oil supply, refinery operations, transportation disruptions and regional taxes, so carriers should not build cash-flow plans around a single projected year-end number.

Operators can respond by recording gallons, price, miles and state for every purchase, then comparing actual truck-level fuel economy with the fleet's assumptions. Route planning should consider safe, reliable fueling stops and total trip cost rather than chasing a small pump-price difference with unpaid miles. Proper tire inflation, speed discipline, reduced idling and prompt maintenance can also improve consumption without compromising safety. Surcharges may help fleets recover part of the increase, but formulas, base prices and payment timing vary by contract. Drivers and owner-operators should understand how each surcharge is calculated before accepting a load.
