National Truck Driver Appreciation Week Begins September 13

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week begins September 13, opening a seven-day recognition of the professional drivers who keep freight moving across the United States. The American Trucking Associations announced September 11 that the 38th annual observance runs through September 19 and honors nearly 3.6 million professional truck drivers. ATA says trucks safely deliver more than 72% of the nation's freight tonnage.

Carriers, state trucking associations and industry suppliers are planning meals, giveaways, safety events and driver-focused gatherings nationwide. ATA's schedule encourages supporters to wear the campaign's green and yellow colors Monday, host driver meals Tuesday, join a Women In Motion webinar Wednesday, share public thanks Thursday and close the week with employee events or raffles Friday. ATA and the Department of Transportation also plan activities centered on safety and public awareness.

Recognition is most meaningful when it reflects the daily realities of the job. Fleets can pair appreciation events with practical improvements: clean and reliable equipment, clear detention policies, safe parking support, honest dispatch communication and schedules that respect legal rest. CDL schools can use the week to connect students with experienced drivers and explain the professionalism required beyond passing a skills test.

Motorists also have a role. Leaving extra following distance, staying out of a truck's blind spots and avoiding distracted driving gives commercial drivers the room needed to operate safely. For current drivers, the week is a public thank-you for demanding work performed year-round. For future CDL holders, it is a reminder that strong careers are built on preparation, judgment, service and a consistent commitment to safety.
