The National Motor Freight Traffic Association has moved its Threat Report Portal into full operation, giving registered transportation companies a shared channel for reporting cyberattacks and learning from incidents across the freight network. FreightWaves reported October 5 that carriers, shippers and logistics providers can submit successful or attempted attacks without publicly identifying their organizations.
NMFTA vets each submission, removes identifying details and converts the report into information that other participants can use. Shared intelligence can include attackers' tactics, techniques and procedures as well as indicators of compromise such as malicious internet addresses or file hashes. The portal began beta testing during the second quarter and was released publicly in May. About 100 organizations had registered by early June, including large shippers, third-party logistics companies and small carriers.
For trucking operations, the portal addresses a persistent information gap. A carrier may see a fraudulent load request, credential-theft attempt or system intrusion that is already targeting other companies, yet commercial and reputational concerns can discourage open disclosure. An anonymized process can help security teams recognize patterns sooner while keeping sensitive company and customer details out of community reports.
Participation should complement, not replace, a carrier's incident-response plan. Fleets should preserve suspicious messages and system logs, isolate affected devices, notify internal security and legal contacts, and follow applicable reporting requirements before sharing sanitized intelligence. Access controls, multifactor authentication, verified payment changes and tested backups remain essential. The portal's value will grow with timely, accurate contributions, so companies should decide in advance who is authorized to submit an incident and what information must be removed first.
