On-Demand Trailer Network Expands Access for Owner-Operators

Owner-operators working through American Truck Business Services can now receive discounted, on-demand trailer access through a new partnership with REPOWR. FreightWaves reported the agreement August 21. The arrangement connects ATBS clients with REPOWR's Universal Trailer Network while giving REPOWR customers access to ATBS tax, bookkeeping and business-consulting services.

REPOWR says its marketplace offers dry vans, refrigerated trailers and flatbeds at more than 2,000 locations nationwide. ATBS members can register without a signup fee, receive discounted member rates and, when equipment is available, complete a reservation in less than two minutes. The model is intended to help small carriers secure temporary capacity without purchasing a trailer or accepting a long-term lease.

That flexibility can matter when a power-only load appears, a fleet-owned trailer is delayed or a seasonal lane needs extra equipment. It can also reduce fixed overhead during slower periods. On-demand access is not automatically the lowest-cost option, however. Availability can vary by market, and the quoted rental rate is only one part of the trip's economics.

Before reserving equipment, an owner-operator should calculate rental days, mileage or relocation charges, insurance requirements, deposits, cleaning rules and responsibility for damage or roadside repairs. Confirm the trailer's inspection status, registration, tires, lights, brakes, refrigeration condition when applicable and compatibility with the planned cargo. Operators should also compare the pickup and return locations with likely deadhead miles and detention exposure. ATBS says it has worked with more than 150,000 drivers since 1998, giving the partnership a sizeable potential audience. The service can expand equipment options, but each load still needs a complete cost and compliance review before dispatch.
