Operation Safe Driver Week Issues 1,956 CMV Citations

Commercial motor vehicle drivers received 3,409 warnings and 1,956 tickets or citations during the 2026 Operation Safe Driver Week enforcement campaign. Commercial Carrier Journal reported the results October 6. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's official release says officers interacted with 8,083 commercial and passenger-vehicle drivers during the July 12-18 initiative across 36 U.S. states, seven Canadian provinces and Mexico.

Speeding was the most frequently cited unsafe behavior. Commercial drivers received 772 speeding warnings and 342 citations. Seat-belt violations produced 267 warnings and 270 citations, while texting or handheld-device use resulted in 106 warnings and 136 citations. Officers also issued commercial drivers 652 warnings and 319 citations for failing to obey traffic-control devices. The week's special focus—reckless, careless and dangerous driving—generated 50 warnings and 22 citations for commercial drivers.

The overall campaign included passenger vehicles as well as trucks. Across both groups, agencies issued 3,968 warnings and 2,604 citations. More than 2,880 driver contacts ended without a warning or citation, allowing officers to use those stops for direct safety education instead. CVSA also reported outreach on human-trafficking awareness and distributed materials before and during the campaign.

Motor carriers can use the results to target coaching with specific behaviors rather than a generic safety reminder. Review speed data, seat-belt compliance, handheld-device policies, following distance and responses to traffic-control devices. Pair camera or telematics events with route context, then document coaching and repeat-event follow-up. Drivers should know that an enforcement week may end, but the same observable behaviors can lead to citations, crashes and carrier-level safety consequences throughout the year.
