RoadOne IntermodaLogistics has acquired Higgins Transport Service, adding 15 drivers and expanding its drayage and intermodal capacity around Charleston, South Carolina. Trucking Dive reported the transaction August 20. The terms were not disclosed, and Higgins owner Justin Higgins and his team are expected to join RoadOne as part of the combination.
The acquisition strengthens RoadOne's position near a growing deep-water port and complements its existing 384,000-square-foot facility in Summerville. The company also plans another warehouse of nearly 280,000 square feet beside that operation in 2027. RoadOne said Charleston and the broader Southeast remain priorities because of the region's population growth and long-term freight potential.
RoadOne is privately owned and reports more than 2,500 drivers across over 100 port, rail and truckload terminals. Higgins operated as a Charleston-based agent of Wall Street Intermodal. For customers, combining local drayage knowledge with a larger terminal network may create more options for container pickup, transloading, storage and inland distribution. It does not automatically guarantee faster turns, lower prices or added appointment capacity at the port itself.
Drivers and owner-operators evaluating work tied to the expansion should ask about employee or contractor status, dispatch territory, port credential requirements, chassis responsibility, detention pay and how empty-container moves are compensated. Drayage performance depends on more than tractor count: terminal appointments, chassis availability, warehouse labor and gate congestion can determine daily productivity. Shippers should monitor tender acceptance, dwell, free-time exposure and final-mile service after integration. The deal adds people and facilities to the Charleston network; execution will determine whether that capacity translates into more dependable container movement.
