September Class 8 Truck Orders Fall 15% to 19,172 Units

Final North American Class 8 net orders totaled 19,172 units in September, a softer start to the traditional truck-order season. TheTrucker.com reported October 21 that ACT Research measured a 7% decline from September 2025 and a 15% seasonally adjusted drop from August. The result follows unusually strong preliminary trailer orders, underscoring that tractor and trailer buying cycles can move differently.

ACT linked the heavy-duty slowdown to limited planning visibility around 2027 equipment. The research firm said regulatory uncertainty remains a factor and noted that not every manufacturer had fully opened its 2027 order board. Even so, Class 8 backlogs remain above historical averages, suggesting fleets have not abandoned replacement plans. The monthly decline is therefore a caution signal, not proof that demand has collapsed.

Medium-duty activity moved in the opposite direction. Classes 5-7 orders reached 20,297 units, up 27% from a year earlier. ACT said dealer stocking ahead of anticipated 2027 changes and higher prices may be supporting that segment. Different results by weight class matter for vocational fleets, final-mile operators and truckload carriers because their equipment needs, lead times and replacement pressures are not interchangeable.

Fleets considering new tractors should ask dealers for a firm build slot, written price assumptions and the exact emissions configuration before budgeting around an order. Compare financing, warranty terms and expected maintenance on the existing truck against the cost of waiting. Drivers and owner-operators should avoid treating a national order count as a freight forecast. The practical decision depends on profitable miles, fuel exposure, available cash and whether the new equipment can be placed into reliable work.
