Six-State Truck Safety Blitzes Put 99 Drivers Out of Service

Commercial vehicle enforcement operations across six states placed at least 99 drivers out of service and uncovered thousands of violations, FreightWaves reported September 2. The activity covered Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Texas, illustrating how state and local agencies are concentrating inspections on busy freight routes and oilfield corridors.

Texas produced the largest vehicle out-of-service count. Inspectors completed 351 commercial vehicle inspections near Mentone in the Permian Basin, documented 1,935 violations and sidelined 167 vehicles plus 34 drivers. Equipment issues accounted for 1,557 Texas violations, with additional findings involving weight, registration, federal driver rules, hazardous materials and oversize operations.

Arizona's four-day operation along Interstate 40 near Flagstaff included 309 inspections and 516 vehicle weighings. Authorities recorded 1,042 violations, placed 60 vehicles and 59 drivers out of service, and reported DUI and drug-related enforcement. Florida, Georgia and Pennsylvania reported smaller operations, while Indiana identified eight out-of-service violations without specifying how many involved drivers rather than vehicles.

The combined figures are not a national inspection rate and should not be used to estimate every fleet's compliance. They do show the practical value of disciplined pre-trip inspections, accurate credentials and repairs completed before dispatch. Drivers should verify brakes, tires, lights, load securement, permits, medical qualification and hours-of-service records before entering an inspection site. Fleets can reduce roadside downtime by reviewing recurring defects, giving drivers a reliable reporting channel and refusing to dispatch equipment until safety-critical repairs are documented.
