Transfix Adds Driver Identity Checks to Fight Cargo Theft

Transfix has added E3 Group driver authentication to its transportation management system, allowing freight brokers to verify a driver before releasing a pickup number. FreightWaves reported October 6 that the integration places identity screening inside the shipment workflow rather than requiring a separate vendor login. The system checks driver credentials, truck details and other risk signals and stores a verification record with the load.

The tool focuses on deceptive pickups, in which criminals use forged credentials, carrier impersonation or compromised communications to collect legitimate freight. E3 compares the person presenting for a load with information that includes the commercial driver's license, carrier and truck records, device data, location and contact information. The company says its process uses biometric matching and liveness detection among more than 50 identity signals and more than 60 potential fraud signals per load.

Drivers complete the check through a web page and consent to photo and temporary location capture. If authentication fails, E3 withholds the pickup number and alerts the broker or compliance team; the brokerage makes the final decision. E3 says it has authenticated drivers on more than 650,000 loads and now reviews about 5,000 drivers daily. Those company-reported figures describe its customer network and should not be treated as an industrywide theft rate.

For carriers and drivers, the change makes accurate records and verified communication more important. Confirm that dispatchers have the driver's current license, truck, trailer and phone information before arrival. Drivers should open verification requests only from known broker channels and ask dispatch to confirm unexpected links. Brokers should pair identity checks with carrier vetting, facility procedures and clear escalation rules. No single screen can stop every scheme, but verifying the person and equipment at pickup closes a gap that carrier-level checks alone may miss.
