Truck Transportation Adds 4,800 Jobs in August Rebound

Truck transportation employment increased by 4,800 jobs in August to a seasonally adjusted 1,470,300, the sector's highest level since October. FreightWaves reported the gain September 4, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics' official August employment table confirms both the monthly increase and the new total.

The rebound is encouraging, but it does not erase a soft year. Truck transportation payrolls remain 9,900 jobs, or 0.7%, below August 2025. More detailed figures, which trail the headline series by one month, show long-distance truckload employment at 501,400 in July. That was nearly 5,000 above January but 3,900 below a year earlier. Less-than-truckload employment edged up only 100 jobs from June to 247,100 and remained 2,000 below July 2025.

Other freight employment moved differently. Warehousing and storage lost 2,600 positions in August, falling to 1,837,400 and sitting 32,000 below a year earlier. FreightWaves also reported a lower August driver-pay index from Superior Trucking Payroll Service, while its turnover reading eased to 9.37%. Together, the figures suggest that one stronger hiring month has not yet become a broad freight-labor expansion.

CDL drivers evaluating opportunities should compare guaranteed pay, available miles, equipment condition, benefits and home time instead of treating the national gain as proof that every fleet is hiring. Carriers should watch several months of payroll, freight-volume and rate data before expanding headcount. August's increase is a meaningful signal, but sustained demand will determine whether it becomes a durable trucking jobs recovery.
