Freight Market Rates and Demand

Truckload Base Rates Rise 10% While Freight Volumes Gain 2%

Truckload pricing is strengthening faster than freight demand, adding another unusual chapter to the current market cycle. FreightWaves reported October 31 that the Cass Truckload Linehaul Index showed rates up 10% in September while shipment volume rose only 2%. The gap suggests pricing pressure can increase even when demand remains near the lower end of its historical range.

The two indexes measure different parts of the market. The Cass Freight Shipments Index draws from invoice activity across truckload, less-than-truckload, intermodal and smaller modes, making it a broad but slightly delayed demand indicator. The Truckload Linehaul Index tracks base truckload costs while excluding fuel and accessorial charges, which helps separate underlying linehaul pricing from volatile diesel and service fees.

FreightWaves' review of the past 25 years shows that freight cycles vary widely in length and cause. Economic shocks, regulatory changes, capacity additions, fuel prices and interest rates can all change the pattern. The report says higher barriers to entry and weak demand are producing an inflationary market that does not closely resemble the stable 2010-2015 period. A 10% rate increase therefore does not guarantee a broad volume boom.

Carriers should compare contract, spot and actual lane margins instead of relying on a single national index. Shippers can test routing guides and tender acceptance before assuming capacity is uniformly tight. Owner-operators should separate linehaul revenue from fuel reimbursement and accessorial earnings when evaluating offers. The practical lesson is to plan for uneven conditions: protect service on strengthening lanes, watch costs closely and avoid adding equipment solely because one indicator points upward.
