WEX Launches Single-Use Cardless Fuel Payments for Trucking Fleets

WEX has introduced cardless fuel payments for its over-the-road fleet customers, giving authorized drivers an alternative when a physical card is unavailable or presents a fraud risk. TheTrucker.com reported the launch September 28. Drivers generate a secure fuel code through the WEX CardControl app and use that code for an approved transaction at a participating location.

Each code is designed for one use, tied to a location and valid for a limited period. The transaction still runs through the fleet's existing WEX program, so established purchase limits and reporting controls remain in place. WEX says cardless fueling is currently available at Pilot, One9, Love's, TA, Petro Stopping Centers, TA Express and Maverik, with additional network coverage planned during 2026.

The option can reduce downtime caused by lost, stolen or delayed cards, including during driver onboarding. Fleets can use physical cards and cardless codes interchangeably while sharing the same account limits. WEX also offers the capability through an application programming interface for companies that want to place the workflow inside their own driver application.

Cardless technology should complement, not replace, basic fuel controls. Managers should limit who can issue codes, review location and gallon exceptions, disable access promptly when employment or equipment assignments change and reconcile purchases against dispatch records. Drivers should generate codes only through approved software and never forward screenshots or credentials to an unexpected caller. A short-lived code narrows the exposure window, but account security still depends on device protection, user permissions and rapid reporting of suspicious transactions.
