XPO LTL Tonnage Accelerates as Manufacturing Recovery Builds

XPO says a strengthening U.S. manufacturing sector is translating into faster less-than-truckload growth, especially among industrial customers. Trucking Dive reported August 14 that the Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index expanded for a seventh consecutive month in July. XPO views the improvement as an early stage of a longer demand cycle rather than a short seasonal bounce.

The carrier's North American LTL business generated $1.43 billion in second-quarter revenue, up 15.2% from a year earlier. Shipments per day rose 2.8%, while tonnage per day increased 1%. The monthly trend accelerated: XPO said tonnage moved from a 1.5% year-over-year decline in April to gains of 0.5% in May and 4% in June. July shipments and tonnage per day each increased more than 6% from the prior year.

Industrial freight is particularly important because XPO estimates it represents about two-thirds of LTL activity. The company added 2,700 local customers during the quarter, many in industrial markets, and reported a record-low damage claims ratio below 0.2%. Its purchase of 28 service centers in the Yellow bankruptcy auction also left the network with more than 30% excess door capacity, providing room to absorb additional volume without immediately rebuilding the terminal footprint.

The figures are encouraging, but one carrier's gains do not guarantee equal demand across every lane or commodity. LTL fleets should watch shipment count, weight per shipment, dock utilization, claims and revenue quality together. Drivers considering LTL work should ask whether a role is linehaul, pickup-and-delivery or a dock combination, along with schedule, endorsement and overtime expectations. For shippers, stronger manufacturing can tighten preferred pickup windows before nationwide capacity looks constrained. XPO's results show how industrial recovery can reach trucking through many smaller shipments, not only full truckloads.
