What Is an O Restriction on a CDL?
The O restriction indicates that a Class A CDL holder is not authorized to operate a tractor-trailer combination connected by a fifth wheel. It is applied when the driver completed the Class A skills test in a vehicle with a pintle hook or another non-fifth-wheel connection.
The restriction does not prevent operation of vehicles that the CDL holder is otherwise properly licensed and endorsed to drive, including qualifying Class B vehicles. Removing O expands the Class A combinations the driver may legally operate.
What is a fifth wheel?
A fifth wheel is a circular coupling plate mounted on the tractor. Its locking mechanism connects to the trailer’s kingpin, allowing the semitrailer to pivot while maintaining a secure connection.
