Five More ELDs Revoked as FMCSA Sets October 6 Replacement Deadline

FMCSA removed five electronic logging devices from its registered list on August 6 after determining that they failed to meet minimum federal requirements. The affected products are MOONLIGHT ELD, HGRS ELD, HIGHEST ELD, TRUCKFORD ELD and Sparkle ELD. The agency tied the action to the technical standards in Appendix A to Subpart B of 49 CFR Part 395 but did not publish device-specific defects.

Motor carriers using any of the five devices have until October 6, 2026, to install a compliant replacement from FMCSA’s registered-device list. The official bulletin says carriers should discontinue using the revoked equipment and temporarily record required hours with paper logs or logging software. This transition period is not permission to stop maintaining records of duty status.

Before October 6, enforcement personnel are encouraged not to cite affected drivers for having no record of duty status or failing to use a registered ELD. Inspectors can instead review paper logs, logging software or the revoked device’s display as a backup. Beginning October 6, continued use will be treated as operating without an ELD; drivers can be cited and placed out of service under the applicable criteria.

A provider may correct the deficiencies and return a device to the registered list, but FMCSA strongly encourages proactive replacement rather than waiting. Fleets should identify every assigned unit, preserve existing log data, select a currently registered product, verify vehicle and driver mappings, and train drivers before the cutoff. Drivers should know the temporary logging procedure and carry enough blank records. A documented transition reduces the risk of missing data, roadside confusion and preventable downtime.
