J.B. Hunt Q3 Revenue Hits $3.68 Billion as Operating Costs Climb

J.B. Hunt Transport Services reported $3.68 billion in third-quarter revenue, modestly beating the $3.59 billion consensus estimate after warning investors in September about rising costs. FreightWaves reported October 15 that adjusted expectations called for earnings of $1.81 per share; the carrier produced $1.82. The quarter marked a fifth consecutive year-over-year improvement in operating income and earnings per share, but the result also showed how quickly fuel and labor can absorb freight-market gains.

The company said diesel, driver-related expenses and cargo claims created more than $50 million in combined pressure. Intermodal revenue increased 20% year over year to $1.83 billion as loads grew 8% and revenue per load rose 11%. Excluding fuel, revenue per load was up 2%. Eastern intermodal volume climbed 18%, while transcontinental volume increased 1%. The segment's 91.9% operating ratio was slightly worse than a year earlier as personnel, equipment and benefits costs increased.

Dedicated revenue rose 11%, but its operating ratio deteriorated to 91.5%. Higher driver expenses, medical claims, insurance premiums and startup costs weighed on performance. Brokerage posted a second straight operating profit after 13 losing quarters, while the asset-light truckload unit moved to a $7 million operating profit after a second-quarter loss.

For drivers and smaller carriers, the figures are a useful market signal rather than a direct forecast. Growing revenue does not guarantee wider margins when fuel, insurance, claims and labor rise at the same time. Fleets should compare each lane's revenue with deadhead, detention and truck-level costs, while drivers evaluating offers should ask about available miles, freight mix and compensation beyond a headline rate. J.B. Hunt's results point to continuing demand, but they also reinforce that operating discipline determines whether growth becomes profit.
