Six-State Truck Safety Operation Finds 1,964 Commercial Vehicle Violations

A coordinated Northeast enforcement campaign inspected 915 commercial vehicles and recorded 1,964 violations during three days of roadside activity. Transport Topics reported November 3 that Operation Wicked Safe ran October 13-15 across Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. Participating agencies issued 319 out-of-service orders and made 36 arrests for alleged impaired driving across the broader traffic operation.

Massachusetts accounted for 577 commercial vehicle inspections and 1,307 violations. State Police identified suspended operators, false logbooks, drivers operating without the required CDL, controlled substances in commercial vehicles and brakes out of adjustment among the problems found. The Massachusetts unit also made three commercial-vehicle arrests and issued more than $72,000 in fines. Other participating states supplied the remaining inspection and enforcement totals.

The results should not be read as 1,964 separate trucks or as proof that every violation created the same safety risk. A single inspection can produce multiple findings, and an equipment defect, driver-qualification problem and recordkeeping violation require different corrective actions. An out-of-service order also has a specific legal scope that must be resolved before the affected driver or vehicle returns to operation.

Carriers can use the operation as a practical audit checklist. Verify CDL and medical status before dispatch, review logs for accuracy, close reported maintenance defects and confirm brakes, lights, tires and required documents during pre-trip inspections. Drivers should answer inspectors truthfully and avoid guessing when asked for records. The strongest preparation is not memorizing a blitz date; it is maintaining the driver, vehicle and carrier file every day so a routine stop does not reveal a preventable compliance gap.
