Truckload Capacity Contracts for 11th Month as Holiday Inventories Surge

Truckload capacity contracted for an 11th consecutive month in October as retailers and manufacturers accelerated inventory purchases before the holidays. FreightWaves reported November 3 that the Logistics Managers' Index placed transportation capacity at 38, well below the neutral level of 50. Transportation utilization remained strong at 63.5, while the transportation-prices measure reached 88.

The overall Logistics Managers' Index increased to 70.7, its second-highest level in more than four years. Inventory levels jumped eight points to 66.9, the fastest growth rate in four years, and inventory costs climbed to 88.8. Warehouse capacity remained in contraction at 43.5 while warehouse prices increased to 80.7. Together, the readings describe limited space and rapidly rising supply-chain costs rather than a simple increase in consumer demand.

Contract negotiations are reflecting that pressure. FreightWaves reported that recent truckload contract renewals averaged 13% above prior base rates, while some large carriers are seeking at least double-digit increases. Logistics managers expect tight conditions to persist over the next 12 months, with a future transportation-pricing reading of 90. These are survey and market indicators, not guaranteed rate increases for every lane, customer or equipment type.

Carriers should compare national signals with tender acceptance, loaded miles, deadhead and actual lane margins before adding trucks. Shippers can protect service by testing routing guides, confirming holiday forecasts and reducing detention at busy facilities. Owner-operators should separate linehaul, fuel and accessorial revenue when evaluating offers. The data supports firmer truckload pricing, but profitability still depends on operating cost, equipment utilization and whether the seasonal inventory build converts into durable freight after the holidays.
