Diesel Prices Could Stay Elevated Through Spring 2027

Diesel prices may remain elevated through spring 2027 as tight refining capacity, pipeline constraints and seasonal heating-oil demand limit relief for fleets. FreightWaves reported October 28 that fuel and truck-stop executives delivered that outlook during the WEX OTR Summit. Their comments describe an industry forecast, not an official price projection or a guaranteed timeline for every market.

High refinery utilization leaves little room for unplanned outages, while regional supply problems can push wholesale prices higher even when crude oil is relatively stable. The Northeast faces an additional winter challenge because diesel and heating oil draw from the same middle-distillate supply. Executives said those conditions could keep volatility in fleet budgets into next spring.

The discussion also warned carriers not to judge a fuel program only by its advertised discount. One example showed a smaller stated discount producing a net pump price 7.5 cents per gallon below a competing location. Base price, taxes, network coverage, card fees and the distance driven off route can all change the actual cost of a fill. Savings claims should therefore be tested against a carrier's own lanes and transaction data.

Small fleets can prepare by tracking net fuel cost per loaded and total mile, updating surcharge calculations promptly and comparing multiple dependable stops along regular routes. Dispatchers should avoid sending a truck far out of route for a headline discount that disappears after extra miles and driver time. Review card controls, receipt matching and fraud alerts, and model how a sustained price increase would affect cash flow. A forecast cannot predict every weekly move, but disciplined purchasing and transparent customer surcharges can reduce the damage from a prolonged high-price period.
